What is a Lessons & Carols Service?
King’s College, Cambridge, England began its annual Lessons & Carols service on Christmas Eve in 1918, the final year of the First World War. During a time of hopelessness and fatigue, the hope surrounding the message of Christ’s birth was eagerly received.
For decades this service has been a part of the season of Advent, a time when Christians prepare and equip themselves for the coming of the promised Lord and Savior. Scripture “lessons” are read from Genesis, Isaiah, and the Gospels following the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus in nine readings. The lessons are interspersed with choral and congregational singing of familiar Christmas carols and music.
What is a Service of Light?
A Service of Light can be used in a variety of settings, usually as an introduction to a special service such as Christmas Eve.
The service includes the entrance of the ministers into the darkened church, an opening greeting, a short lesson of scripture, a prayer for light, the lighting of the candles, and the singing of the Phos hilaron (O Gracious Light). The Phos hilaron is the ancient candle-lighting hymn of the church.
All Saints' Service of Light will be followed by the Eucharist in order for the first act of Christmas Day to be the body of Christ gathering in communion with one another giving thanks to the Father for the gift of his Son.
