Elder Candidates

(from the Liturgy of Ordination: Explanation and Charge)
It belongs to those in the office of elder, both severally and jointly, to watch diligently over the flock committed to his charge, that no corruption of doctrine or of morals enter therein. You must exercise government and discipline, and take oversight not only of the spiritual interests of the particular church, but also the Church generally when called thereunto. You are to visit the people at their homes, especially the sick. You are to instruct the ignorant, comfort the mourner, nourish and guard the children of the Church. You are to pray with and for the people, being careful and diligent in seeking the fruit of the Word and Sacraments among the flock. You are to love and serve the people among whom you work, caring alike for young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor. In all that you do, you are to nourish Christ's people from the riches of his grace, and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come.

You are to make Christ and his redemptive love known, by your word and example, to those among whom you live, and work, and worship. And you are to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world. It is also your duty as a deacon to develop the grace of liberality in the members of the church, to devise effective methods of collecting the gifts of the people, and to distribute these gifts according to the purposes for which they are contributed. At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ's people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself.
